Why Exfoliate
Why Exfoliate
Exfoliation - the removal of dry/dead skin cells on the surface of the skin and is one of the most important aspects of your home skincare routine for face and body. Exfoliation helps many skin problems and increases blood circulation, which promotes healthy and glowing skin.
There are several ways in which to exfoliate your skin such as chemical and physical exfoliants. Physical: sponge, towel, brush, liquid, gels, and scrubs with microbeads, sugars or salts. Chemical – Alpha and Beta hydroxy acids and enzymes.
- Unclogs pores by removing dead skin cells from face and body resulting in the relief of blackheads and whiteheads.
- Prevents blemishes by removing pore blockages and removing excessive oils.
- According to the American Academy of Dermatology, exfoliation can leave your skin looking brighter and improve the effectiveness of topical skin care products by enhancing absorption.
- Exfoliation does not require harsh chemicals or excess pressure on the skin or expensive products. Begin 1 time a week and monitor your response especially with older and sensitive skin then apply moisturizing oils at night even on oily skin.
- Acne prone skin can benefit from exfoliation as pore blockage is removed and cells are able to turnover and increases collagen production.
- Use a quarter size of scrub and apply to clean moist face in a circular motion for 30 seconds to 1 minute then rinse with warm water followed by cool water and pat dry. A moisturizer for daytime as well as nighttime is necessary.
- Skin can appear very dry because it needs exfoliation before moisture can penetrate the skin. Proceed slowly with gentle and no harsh products.
- Over exfoliation of the skin may result in excess skin dryness and exposure to bacteria.
- It is acceptable to exfoliate during the morning or night, but not both. Moring would be great for a man before a shave while evening would be good for a woman after removal of makeup and before applying treatments or moisturizers.
- Sugar molecules from sugar scrubs draw moisture into the skin which give a plumping effect and decrease the appearance of fine lines, but this is not a cure as the skin requires appropriate nutrients and hydration.
